Chandogya

The Chandogya Upanishad is notable for its lilting metric structure, its mention of ancient cultural elements such as musical instruments, and embedded philosophical premises that later served as foundation for Vedanta schools.

Twelfth Khanda

The king said - ‘O son of Upamanyu, whom do you worship as the Vaiśvānara Self?’ The son of Upamanyu replied - ‘O King, I worship Swargaloka.’ The king said - ‘The Self you worship is the Vaiśvānara Self which is Suteja—i.e., bright and beautiful. That is why whoever is born in your family is bright, brighter, and still brighter’.

‘You enjoy eating food and you see your dear ones and everything pleasant. He who worships the Vaiśvānara Self thus enjoys eating food and is able to see his dear ones. He also has children in his family who shine with the radiance of Brahman (i.e., they become well known for their good conduct and scholarship). But Swargloka is like the head of the Self.’ Then the king said - ‘If you had not come to me your head would have fallen off’.
