Chandogya

The Chandogya Upanishad is notable for its lilting metric structure, its mention of ancient cultural elements such as musical instruments, and embedded philosophical premises that later served as foundation for Vedanta schools.

Fourteenth Khanda

The fires said: ‘O Somya Upakosala, we have just told you the knowledge of fire. That is also Self-knowledge. Your teacher will tell you about the way to the next world.’ In due course, his teacher returned, and he called him, saying, ‘Upakosala’.

Upakosala replied - ‘Yes, lord.’ His teacher said - ‘O Somya, your face is shining like that of a knower of Brahman. Who has taught you?’ ‘Sir, who will teach me?’ He said this as if he was trying to hide the truth. Then, pointing to the fires, he said: ‘Earlier they looked, different. Now they look like this.’ In this way, he indicated the fires. The teacher asked - ‘Somya, what did the fires teach you?’.

Upakosala replied - ‘This is what they said.’ (And he told his teacher all that the fires had taught him) The teacher said - ‘O Somya, they taught you only about the worlds, but I will teach you about Brahman.
