Mundak

Upanishad opens with declaring Brahma as the first of gods, the creator of the universe, and the knowledge of Brahman (Ultimate Reality, Eternal Principle, Cosmic Self) to be the foundation of all knowledge. The text then lists a succession of teachers who shared the knowledge of Brahman with the next generation.

First Khanda

Hey Soumya! This 'That' is the 'Truth Principle' of substances, just as thousands of sparks are produced from a well-lit fire and all of them are of the same form as fire, in the same way from Akshar-tattva many expressions (entities) arise and in that They all leave.

That divine immaterial Purusha is the external and inner (Truth) and that is Aja (Present); He is beyond life (aprana) and beyond mind (aman), he is the 'Paramatma Tattva', the white light and beyond words.

From this 'Paramatma Tattva' the life, the mind and all the senses are born; And the earth which holds sky, air, fire, water and all is also born.

Agni (Fire) is his head (murdha), the moon and the sun are his eyes, the directions are his organs of hearing (shrotra) and the revealed Vedas are his speech, air is his life, the world is his heart, the earth is at his feet. He is the 'conscience' of all the originated entities.

Fire is generated from 'That' whose compound is 'Sun', rain from 'Soma' and medicines (plants) are produced on earth. A man injects semen into a woman, similarly, the various intelligences are derived from that 'Paramatma-tattva'.

From the same 'Paramatma-tattva', the hymns and chants of Rigveda, Samaveda and Yajurveda, Diksha, all yajna and yoga-karma and charities are derived. It is from Him that there are Samvatsars, there are hosts, there are worlds in which the moon and the sun spread light.

And from him many gods have been born, from him sages, humans and animals and birds have been born, Prana (upper) and Apan (lower) air, paddy and barley (grains), penance, faith, truth, celibacy and the emergence of rules and regulations. That's what happened.

From Him are born the seven lives, the seven flames, the various Samidhas, the seven homes and the holy worlds in which the soul wanders making the cavity of the heart its own, are born from Him; All are in groups of seven each.

From Him all the seas and all these mountains, all these kinds of rivers flow from Him; All plants and chemicals are from 'Him', by the feeling of which this inner soul resides with the material elements.

This Purusha-tattva is the whole universe; 'That' is action, 'that' is penance and 'that' is the ultimate and nectar form 'Brahman'. O Soumya, one who knows this element in the cavity of the heart, removes the knot of ignorance here, in this world.
