Katha

The Katha Upanishad (Kaṭhopaniṣad) is an ancient text and one of the mukhya (primary) Upanishads. The Upanishad is the legendary story of a little boy, Nachiketa – the son of Sage Vajasravasa, who meets Yama (the deity of death).

Second Valli

The eleventh door of the unborn, who has an unbroken mind, is Puri. When he is situated in it, he does not grieve, but when he is freed from it, he attains liberation. This is what you aspire for.

Look at that swan, who lives in purity, he is Vasu in space, he 'happens' on the sacrificial altar, is a guest in the water-vessel. He is in man, He is in the elders, He is the resident of Rit, He is the resident of Vyom, He is all those who are born from water, born from the earth, born from mountains, born from Rit. He is Truth, and Great.

He is the one who raises the Prana in the upward direction, and leaves the Apana in the downward direction. Seated in the center, this Vamana is worshiped by all the gods.

When the body, this soul, situated in the sheath, leaves it, when it becomes free from this sheath, then what remains there? This is what you aspire for.

A mortal man lives neither by prana nor by apana. It is from some other element that we all live, on which the existence of these two is dependent.

Hey Gautam! About the secret and eternal Brahman, and what happens to the soul at death, I will certainly tell you.

Because, some souls enter a womb to take on a body. The other, the immovable Paramatma, follows the sthanu. Everyone's destination is according to their karma, and shrutbodh (revealed knowledge).

This Purusha, who, while creating various desires, remains awake among the sleeping, is called the Purusha of Light, the Brahman, the Immortality. All worlds and worlds are dependent on him only. Nobody goes beyond that. This is what you aspire for.

Just as only one fire has entered the earth, but it assumes the form of the form with which it comes in contact, similarly, the soul present in all the bodies is the same, but he takes the different forms as per the contact. Similarly, he is outside of them as well.

Just as the same air has entered the earth, but by contact with different forms, it assumes the same form, similarly, the soul present in all beings is the same, but with contact, takes the respective form. Similarly, he is outside of them as well.

Just as the sun is the eye of this gross world, yet the external eye defects do not affect it, similarly, the inner soul present in all beings is one, but worldly sorrows do not affect it, therefore, it is beyond that sorrow, and fears.

The Oneself, the One who resides within all beings, who is calm and who controls all, creates many forms in the same form. Those who are patient, follow him mirror-likely in the soul, they get eternal happiness, but not people other than these.

One constant in many impermanences, one element in many conscious entities, despite being one, which rules the wishes of many. Those patient men who follow him mirror-likely in the soul, they get eternal peace, not people other than these.

This is "that", that's all, they can experience that indescribable supreme happiness. How do I know about him, whether he himself is aura, or is reflected by some other aura?

There the sun cannot shine, and the moon becomes lustreless, all the stars become lightless. There, even electricity does not shine, nor does any terrestrial fire appear. For whatever is luminous is but a reflection of his light, it is from his aura that all this is reflected.
