Katha

The Katha Upanishad (Kaṭhopaniṣad) is an ancient text and one of the mukhya (primary) Upanishads. The Upanishad is the legendary story of a little boy, Nachiketa – the son of Sage Vajasravasa, who meets Yama (the deity of death).

First Valli

Swayambhu has made the doors of the body outward, that's why the soul of man looks outside, not the inner soul. Here and there is rarely a wise man (Dhir Purush) who, desiring immortality, turns his vision inwardly and sees the soul.

Other childish people, following desires and pleasures, go into the noose of death, which is ready to take them with open mouth. But the patient person, knowing the immortality, does not aspire to get the eternal (pole) element in the impermanent substances of this world.

It is from the inner soul that a person knows form, taste and smell. It is from the inner self that he knows sound and touch, and the pleasure (sex) of a man with a woman. What else is there in this world, which is left to know that soul? This is what you aspire for.

The patient man, knowing the great all-pervading Supreme Lord, by whom one sees the end of both the dream and the waking states, ceases to grieve.

One who has come to know very closely the soul, the soul, who is the Lord of the past and the future, who is the enjoyer of this sweetness, then he does not shy away from anyone, or he does not feel jealous towards anyone. This is what you aspire for.

The seer of truth is the sage who sees that which was manifested before penance, which existed before the waters. He sees him in the deep heart cavity of the living beings, because there he resides along with the Bhootagrams (Pachabhutas). This is what you aspire for.

This is Aditi, the mother of the gods, who emerged through the Prana, who appeared with the Bhutagrama, and having entered the heart cavity of substances, she is established there. This is what you aspire for.

Just as a pregnant woman carries the womb, in the same way the fire of knowledge resides in the forests. He is adored day by day by those who lead a conscious life and are conscious. Because it is fire. This is what you aspire for.

The one from whom the sun rises, and in whom the sun sets, and in whom all the gods are situated, no one encroaches upon him. This is what you aspire for.

What is in this world, is there in the hereafter. What is there in the other world, is also here in this world. One who believes that he sees the diversity here, he attains death from death.

From the mind, this is the truth that here, in this world, nothing is of different forms. One who thinks that he sees diversity here, goes from death to death.

Established within our self-being, the Purusha is just a thumb. He is the God of the past and the future, after being interviewed by Him, a person does not shy away from anyone, nor does he feel jealous towards anyone. This is what you aspire for.

Inwardly, the Purusha is only a thumb, it is like a smokeless blazing fire. He is the God of his past and his future. Today it is only He, tomorrow also it will be only He. This is what you aspire for.

Just as the water that rains on mountain-tops, and in inaccessible places, flows in different directions here and there, in the same way he who sees separately the law and action of the one self-principle, as he sees, Follows the same path.

But just as pure water poured into pure water remains as pure as it was, O Gautama dynasty! The soul of the sage who knows God is also like that.
