Vidhur Niti

Vidura Neeti offers advice on various topics that are still true to date and touches on issues such as relationships, how to understand people’s truth, follow ethical values and to lead life, and achieve success through Dharma.

Third Chapter

Dhritarashtra said, Great Buddha! You again say things with Dharma & Artha, I do not feel satisfied listening to them. You are giving wonderful speech on this subject.

Vidur ji said, the behaviour of tenderness, both of them are the same, or the behaviour of sweetness has special importance in bathing in all the pilgrimages, and with all the living beings.

Bibho! You treat your son Kaurav-Pandav with both equally tenderness. By doing this, you will go to heaven after death after getting great success in this world.

Best man! In this world, as long as a man's holy fame is sung, he is established in the heavenly world.

In this context, let us give the example of that ancient history, which describes the dispute of Virochana with Sudhanva for Keshini.

Rajan! Once upon a time, an exceptionally beautiful girl named Keshini attended the Swayamvara Sabha, desirous of winning the best husband.

At the same time Dalyakumar Virochana came there with the desire to have him. Then Keshini talked to the demon king there like this.

Keshini said, Virochan! Are Brahmins superior or demons? If Brahmins are the best, then why shouldn't Sudhanva Brahmin sit on my bed? Means why shouldn't I marry Sudhanva?

Virochana said, Keshini! We are the best children of Prajapati; therefore, we are the best. This whole world belongs to us only. What are the gods before us? And what are Brahmins?

Keshini said, Virochan! Let us both wait at this place, tomorrow morning Sudhanva will come here, then I will see you both present together.

Virochana said, Kalyani! I will do as you say, in the morning you will see me and Sudhantra present together.

Vidurji says, Dhritarashtra, O best among kings! After this, when the night passed, and the sun rose, Sudhanva came to the place where Virochana was present with Keshini.

Bharat Shrestha! Sudhanva Prahad Kumar came to Virochana, and Keshini. Seeing the Brahmin coming, Keshini stood up and requested him to seat, padya, and ardhya.

Sudhanva said, Prahlad-nandan! I only touch this golden beautiful throne of yours, I cannot sit on it with you, because by this we both will become equal.

Virochana said, Sudhanvan! For you, the posture of pain mat, or Kush is appropriate. You are not even fit to sit on an equal seat with me.

Sudhanva said, Father and son can sit together on a seat, two Brahmins, two Kshatriyas, two old men, two Vaishyas, and two Shudras can also sit together, but no other two persons can sit together.

Your father Prahlad, serves me sitting down. You are still a child, brought up happily at home, so you have no knowledge of these things.

Virochana said, Good luck! Whatever wealth we asuras have, gold, cow, horse, etc., I bet on it, both of us go and ask those who are knowledgeable about this subject, who is the best among the two of us?

Sudhanva said, Virochan! May the gold, the cow and the horse remain with you, at the risk of both our lives, ask those who are knowledgeable.

Virochana said, well, after putting our lives at stake, where will we both go? I can neither go to the gods, nor can I ever make decisions through humans.

When our lives are at stake, we will both go to your father. I believe that Prahlad cannot lie even for his son.

Vidur ji says, by betting like this, both Virochana and Sudhanva went to the place where Prahlad ji was.

Prahlad said (in his mind), Those two who never walked together, this Sudhanva and Virochana, are seen today coming from the same path, angry like snakes.

Virochan! I ask you, have you become friends with Sudhanva? Then how are you coming together? Earlier both of you never used to walk together.

Virochana said, Father! I have not become friends with Sudhanva. Both of us are risking our lives. I ask you the real thing. Don't give false answer to my question.

Prahlad said, Servants! Bring water and honey for Sudhanva. Then said to Sudhanva - Brahmin! You are my respected guest, I have kept a white cow, very fat and fresh for you.

Sudhanva said, Prahlad! I have got water and honey on the way. You answer the question that I am asking, is Brahmin the best or Virochana?

Prahlad said, Brahman! I have only one son, and here you yourself are present, how can a man like me decide the dispute between you two?

Sudhanva said, Matiman! Give the cow and whatever other wealth you have to your other son Virochana, but in the dispute between us, you must answer correctly.

Prahlad said, Sudhanvan! Now I ask you these things, what is the condition of such an evil speaker who does not speak the truth, or takes untrue decisions?

Sudhanva said, the situation that occurs in the night of a woman with a son-in-law, a gambler who has lost in gambling, and a man whose body is distressed by carrying a load, the same situation happens to the speaker who gives reverse justice.

One who gives false judgement, being imprisoned in the king's city, suffering hunger at the outer gate, sees many enemies.

Telling a lie for an animal, five generations, telling a lie for a cow, ten generations, telling a lie for a horse, a hundred generations, and telling a lie for a human being, a thousand generations in hell Pushes.

The one who tells lies for gold, past and future, all generations fall into hell, the one who tells lies for earth and women, only destroys himself, so, you should never lie for land or woman.

Prahlad said, Virochana! Sudhanva's father Angira is better than me, Sudhanva is better than you, her mother is also better than your mother, so today you have lost to Sudhanva.

Virochan! Now Sudhanva is the master of your life. Good luck! Now if you give, I want to get back Virochana again.

Sudhanva said, Prahlad! You have accepted dharma only, have not told lies out of selfishness, so now I am giving this rare son to you again.

Prahlad! I have given this son of yours, Virochana, to you again, but now he should walk near Keshini and wash my feet.

Vidur ji says, That's why Rajendra! Don't lie to the earth. Don't go to the face of destruction with your son and ministers by not telling the truth because of your son's selfishness.

Gods don't guard with a stick like shepherds. Those whom they want to protect, they endow him with perfect intelligence.

As a man concentrates on welfare, so does all his wishes come true, there is no doubt in this.

The Vedas do not absolve the illusory one from the sins of those who behave deceitfully, but as the young birds leave the nest when their wings come out, so the Vedas also abandon him at the time of death.

Drinking alcohol, discord, enmity with the group, creating differences between husband and wife, creating differences among family members, enmity with the king, disputes between men and women, and evil ways - all these are worth giving up.

Never take a palm reader, a thief in business, a gambler, a doctor, an enemy, a friend, and a dancer - these seven as witnesses.

Offering fire with respect, observing silence with respect, self-study with respect, and performing yajna with respect - these four actions are supposed to remove fear, but they themselves, if not performed properly, give fear.

The one who sets fire to the house, the one who gives poison, the one who eats up the earnings of the child, the one who sells somras, the one who makes weapons, the slanderer, the traitor, the promiscuous woman,

The one who kills the womb, the teacher is a womanizer, drinks alcohol while being a Brahmin, has a very sharp temper, crows like an atheist, blasphemes the Vedas,

The village priest, the Bratya cruel, and the one who commits violence even after praying for protection, having power - all of them are like Brahma killers.

Gold is identified by a burning fire, a good man by virtue, a saint by behaviour, a beginner in fear, patience in economic difficulties and an enemy and a friend are tested in difficult opposition.

Old age destroys beautiful forms, hope destroys beauty, death destroys life, habit of seeing faults destroys righteousness, anger destroys Lakshmi, service to vile men destroys good nature, lust destroys shame, and pride destroys everything.

Lakshmi is born by auspicious deeds, grows by fervour, takes root by cleverness, and is protected by restraint.

Eight qualities adorn a man - intelligence, nobility, strength, knowledge of scriptures, bravery, not talking too much, giving as much as possible, and being grateful.

Tat! There is one quality, which stubbornly collects authority over all these important qualities. At the time when the king worships a man, at that time only one quality (Raj Samman) gets glory more than all the other qualities.

Rajan! These eight qualities in the human world lead to the darshan of the heavenly world, out of which four are always associated with the saints, they are always present in them. And the gentlemen follows the rest of four.

Yajna, charity, study, and austerity—these four are eternally associated with beauty, and sense control, truthfulness, simplicity, and gentleness, these four are followed by the sages.

Yagya, study, charity, penance, truth, forgiveness, kindness and greed, these are the eight types of paths of Dharma.

Out of these, the first four can be consumed even for arrogance, but the last four, which are not greatness, cannot remain in them at all.

The meeting which does not have elders is not a meeting, which does not talk about Dharma, is not old, which does not have truth, it is not Dharma, and the one which is full of hypocrisy is not addiction.

Truth, modesty, knowledge of the scriptures, learning, nobility, modesty, strength, wealth, kindness, and speaking wondrous words, these are the ten means of heaven.

A person with a reputation for sin, while doing sinful deeds, gets only the result of sin, and a person who does good deeds, while doing good deeds, enjoys only the result of good deeds.

That's why a man observing a praised fast should not commit sin, because repeated sin destroys the intellect.

The person whose intelligence is destroyed, that person always commits sins. Similarly, virtue done repeatedly increases intelligence.

Whose intelligence increases, that person always does good deeds. In this way, a person doing good deeds goes to the abode of good deeds. That's why a man should always be concentrated and consume virtue.

The one who sees faults in virtues, the one who dwells on the essence, the ruthless, the enmity, and the deceitful person who practices sin, soon receives great pain.

A man of pure intellect, free from evil vision, always performing auspicious deeds, attains great happiness, and is respected everywhere.

One who receives wisdom from wise men, he is a learned man, because only a wise man is able to make progress without any effort by attaining Dharma and Artha.

Do that work during the day, so that you can live happily at night, and do that work in eight months, so that you can spend four months of rain happily.

In the first stage, he should do that work, so that he can live happily in old age, and throughout his life, he should do that work, so that he can live happily even after death.

A gentleman praises food when he has digested it, a woman after her idle youth has passed, a brave man after he has won a battle, and a ascetic when he has attained the knowledge of the elements.

The fault that is hidden by the money obtained from unrighteousness, it is not hidden, a different and new fault appears.

The ruler of the disciples who control their mind and senses is the Guru, the ruler of the wicked is the king, and the ruler of those who commit secret sins is Yamraj, the son of the sun.

The origin of sages, rivers, families of sages, and the bad character of women cannot be known.

Rajan! The one who is engaged in the service and worship of Brahmins, the donor, the one who behaves softly towards his family members, and the humble king follows the earth forever.

The Shar, the scholar and the one who knows service, these three types of men, collect golden flowers from the earth.

Actions performed with intelligence are superior, actions performed with physical strength are of the middle class, actions performed with Jadga are adham, and the work of carrying a load is great adham.

Rajan! Now how do you want progress by placing the burden of the kingdom on Duryodhana, Shakuni, the foolish Dushasan, and Karna?

Bharat Shrestha! Pandavas are endowed with all the best qualities, and treat you with the attitude of a father, you also treat them appropriately by keeping the attitude of a son.
