Dhritarashtra said - Tat! I am still awake burning with anxiety, tell me what you think I can do. Because among us you are expert in the knowledge of skin and earth.
Generous Vidur! You think with your intelligence, preach me properly. Whatever you think is beneficial for Yudhishthira and auspicious for the Kauravas, do tell all that.
Scholar! The apprehension of evil remains in my mind, that is why I see only evil everywhere, so I am asking you with a distraught heart, what does the unborn enemy Yudhishthir want? So, tell everything correctly.
Vidur ji said - Humans should tell the one, whom he does not want to be defeated, whatever it may be, whether it is good or bad, without even asking him.
That's why Rajan! I will tell you the same thing which will benefit all the Kauravas. Listen carefully to the welfare and dharmik words that I am saying.
Don't get involved in fraudulent activities, that prove to be fraudulent by using untrue methods (gambling etc.).
Similarly, any action performed with caution, using good methods, if it is not successful, the wise man should not feel guilty for it.
In deeds done with a purpose, first the purpose should be understood. Work should be done after thinking a lot, no work should be started in haste.
It is appropriate for a patient person to first think about the purpose of his actions, the result, and his progress, then whether he should start the work or not.
A king who does not know the extent of position, profit, loss, treasure, country and punishment etc., cannot remain stable in the kingdom.
One who knows their proofs properly, and remains focused in the knowledge of Dharma and Artha, he attains the kingdom.
Now thinking that the kingdom has been attained, one should not behave inappropriately. Purposefulness destroys wealth in the same way as old age destroys beauty.
The fish, covered with fine bait, swallows the iron hook in greed, not considering its consequences.
Therefore, a man desirous of his progress should eat (or accept) that thing, which is eatable, and can be eaten, can be digested when eaten (or accepted), and is beneficial when digested.
The one who plucks unripe fruits from the tree, does not get juice from those fruits; On the contrary, the seed of that tree is destroyed.
But the one who takes the ripe fruit at the right time, gets the juice from the fruit, and again gets the fruit from that seed.
Just as the bumblebee tastes the honey of flowers while protecting them, similarly the king should also take money from the people without causing them any trouble.
As a gardener plucks each and every flower in the garden, without cutting its root, in the same way the king should protect the subjects from them. The root should not be cut like a coal maker.
What will be my benefit by doing this, and what will be my loss if I don't do it - in this way, after thinking well about the work, then a man should do or not do it.
There are some futile works, which are not capable of being started because of being unattainable, because even the hard work done for them goes in vain.
People don't want to make him their master whose happiness has no fruit, and anger is also useless - just as a woman doesn't want to make an impotent husband.
Those whose origin (means) is small, and the result is great, a wise man quickly puts them to rest, in such works he does not allow obstacles to come.
The king who gazes in such a tender way with love as if his eyes would be drunk, even if he sits silently, the people have affection for him.
The king blossoms well like a tree but remains empty of fruit (i.e. not much giver), even if he is full of fruit (giver), he cannot be climbed, such (i.e. out of reach). Even when he is raw (i.e. less powerful), he should reveal himself as ripe (i.e. full of power), by doing this he will not be destroyed.
The king who pleases the subjects with his eyes, mind, speech and deeds, the subjects remain happy with him.
As a deer is afraid of a tiger, in the same way, the one who is feared by all creatures, he is abandoned by the people even after getting the kingdom of the earth till the sea.
A king situated in injustice, even after having received the kingdom of his forefathers, by his own actions corrupts it like the wind disperses a cloud.
Traditionally, the land of the king's kingdom, who practices the dharma performed by the gentlemen, gets progress, being full of wealth and grains, and increases its opulence.
The king who abandons Dharma and practices unrighteousness, his kingdom shrinks like a skin kept on fire.
The effort that is done to destroy other nations, it is appropriate to do the same for the protection of your state.
One should get the kingdom by dharma and protect it by dharma, because the kingdom based on dharma, after getting Lakshmi, neither the king leaves her, nor does she leave the king there.
Even from a child who talks nonsense, is crazy and talks nonsense, the matter of truth should be accepted from all sides in the same way as gold is taken from the stones.
Just as the one who earns his livelihood by Ushchavati, keeps on eating each and every grain, in the same way, a dhor man should keep on collecting good deeds.
Cows see by smell, brahmins by Vedas, kings by spies, and other ordinary people by eyes.
Rajan! The cow that gives milk with great difficulty, she takes a lot of pride, but the one that gives milk easily, people do not trouble her.
Those metals which bend without heating, do not heat them in fire. People do not try to bend the stick which is bent by itself.
According to this parable, a wise man should bow down to a stronger one, who bows down to a stronger one, as if bowing down to the god Indra.
The protector or master of the animals is the clouds, the assistants of the kings are the ministers, the brothers (protectors) of the Khatris are the husbands, and the Brahmins are the Vedas.
Dharma is protected by truth, knowledge is protected by yoga, form is protected by cleanliness, and the family is protected by virtue.
Pride is protected by weighing, horses are protected by rotation, cows are protected by frequent care, and women are protected by dirty clothes.
I am of the opinion that only a high caste of a man who is devoid of virtue cannot be accepted, because the virtuous conduct of even a person born in a low caste is considered superior.
The one who is envious of others' wealth, beauty, prowess, nobility, happiness, good fortune, and honour, his disease is incurable.
One should be afraid of doing things that should not be done, of being careless in doing things that should be done, and of manifesting mantras before the work is accomplished, and one should not drink such a drink that makes one intoxicated.
The item of knowledge, the item of wealth, and the third is the item of high clan. These are items for proud men, but they are a means of glory for gentle men.
Sometimes in some work, on being requested by gentlemen, wicked people start considering themselves as gentlemen, despite knowing themselves to be famous wicked.
Saints are the ones who support the wise men, saints are the ones who support the saints, saints are the ones who support the wicked, but the wicked do not support the saints.
One who has good clothes conquers the meeting, (i.e. accumulates his influence), one who has a cow, conquers the desire for sweet taste; One who treads carefully conquers (i.e. decides) the path, and a virtuous man conquers all.
Modesty is the main thing in a man, whose modesty is destroyed, his life, money and friends in this world do not prove any purpose.
Bharat Shrestha! Meat predominates in the food of wealthy men, butter in the food of middle-class people, and oil in the food of the poor.
Poor men always eat delicious food, because hunger creates taste in their food, and that (hunger) is very rare for the rich.
Rajan! In the world, the rich often do not have the power to eat, but even wood is digested in the stomach of the poor.
Low men are afraid of not having a livelihood, middle class people are afraid of death, but great men are afraid of humiliation.
Although the intoxication of drinking etc. is also an intoxication, but the intoxication of wealth is very bad, because a man who is intoxicated by wealth does not come to his senses without being corrupted.
Due to lack of control, this world suffers from the senses that enjoy the objects, in the same way as the constellations are despised by the sun etc. planets.
The person who has been easily conquered by the five senses, the one who controls the living beings, his objections increase like the moon in the bright half.
The one who wants to win over the ministers without controlling the mind along with the senses, or who wants to win over the enemy without controlling the ministers, that Ajitendriya Purush is shunned by everyone.
One who first conquers the mind along with the senses considering himself as the enemy, and then, if he desires to conquer the ministers and enemies, he gets success.
The one who conquers the senses and the mind, who punishes the criminals, and who works after examining, the patient, Lakshmi serves a lot.
Rajan! Man's body is the chariot, the intellect is the charioteer, and the senses are its horses. Keeping them under control, a clever and patient man who is careful, travels happily like a chariot with horses under control.
Untrained and uncontrolled horses kill a foolish charioteer on the way, so these senses, if not controlled, are capable of killing a man.
Due to the lack of control over the senses, mistaking good for disaster and disaster for good, the ignorant person considers even great sorrow as happiness.
One who, abandoning Dharma and Artha, becomes under the control of the senses, soon loses his hands of wealth, life, wealth, and women.
One who does not control the senses, even though he is the owner of much wealth, becomes corrupted by opulence because of not controlling the senses.
Bringing the mind, intellect and senses under your control, desire to know your soul by yourself, because the soul is your friend, and the soul is your enemy.
The one who has conquered his own soul, his soul is his friend. That is the true friend, and that is the fixed enemy.
Rajan! Just as two big fish caught in a net with fine holes, together cut the net, so both lust and anger destroy the specific knowledge.
The one who collects the means of victory in this world by thinking of Dharma and Artha, he always becomes happy and prosperous because of having that material.
Those who want to conquer other enemies without conquering the internal enemies of the mind, the five senses, are defeated by the enemies.
Due to lack of control over the senses, even great sages are bound by their deeds, and kings by the pleasures of the kingdom.
By not renouncing sinful wicked people, by associating with them, innocent gentlemen also get the same punishment as them, just as wet wood burns when mixed with dry wood, so never associate with wicked men.
The one who does not control his enemies in the form of five senses, who run towards the five objects, due to attachment, that person is beset by calamity.
Not seeing fault in virtues, simplicity, purity, contentment, speaking sweet words, control of senses, truthful speech, and unsteadiness - these qualities are not present in wicked men.
Enlightenment, anger, tolerance, piety, protection of promise, and charity - these qualities are not present in lowly men.
Foolish people hurt the scholars with abuses and slander. The one who abuses is a partaker of sin, and the one who forgives is freed from sin.
Violence is the power of evil men, punishment is the power of kings, service is the power of women, and forgiveness is the power of the virtuous.
Rajan! Complete restraint of speech is considered very difficult, but a speech full of special meaning and miracle cannot be spoken much.
Rajan! The thing said in sweet words, brings welfare in many ways, but if the same thing is said in bitter words, it becomes the cause of great disaster.
A forest pierced by arrows and cut by axe also flourishes, but a terrible wound done by speech by saying bitter words does not heal.
The arrows called Karni, Nalik, and Naarach can be removed from the body, but the thorn in the form of bitter words cannot be removed, because it sinks inside the heart.
Arrows in the form of words come out of the mouth and hit the heart of others only, the person hurt by them keeps getting confused day and night, so the learned man should not use them on others.
The one whom the gods defeat, they take away his intelligence beforehand, due to which he keeps more eyes on low deeds.
When the time of destruction is present, the intellect becomes dirty, then the injustice which seems like justice, does not come out of the heart.
Bharat Shrestha! That intelligence of your sons has been pervaded by antagonism towards the Pandavas, you are not recognizing them.
Maharaj Dhritarashtra! The one who can be the king of Tribhuvan as well, being full of royal qualities, he is your obedient, Yudhishthir only eligible to be the ruler of this earth.
He who knows the principles of Dharma and Artha, is sharp and intelligent, full of fortune, and surpasses all your sons.
Rajendra! Yudhishthira, the best among the righteous, is suffering a lot because of kindness, gentleness, and wisdom towards you.
