Vidhur Niti

Vidura Neeti offers advice on various topics that are still true to date and touches on issues such as relationships, how to understand people’s truth, follow ethical values and to lead life, and achieve success through Dharma.

First Chapter

Vaishampayan says -
After Sanjay left, the great intelligent king Dhritarashtra said to the gatekeeper, "I want to meet Vidur. Bring them here soon".

The messenger sent by Dhritarashtra, went and said to Vidur, O great one! Our lord Maharaja Dhritarashtra wishes to see you.

On his saying so, Vidur ji went to the palace and said, Doorkeeper! Inform Dhritarashtra about my arrival.

The gatekeeper went and said, Maharaj! By your order, Vidur ji has come here, he wants to have darshan of your feet. Order me, what work should be told to them.

Dhritarashtra said, "Bring in the great wise visionary Vidur, I never have any problem meeting this Vidur".

The gatekeeper came to Vidur and said, "Vidur ji! You enter the heart of the intelligent king Dhritarashtra. Maharaj has told me that I have no problem meeting Vidur".

Vaishampayan ji says, "After that Vidur went inside the palace of Dhritarashtra, and said with folded hands to the worried king"

Mahapragya! I am Vidur, I have come here by your order. If there is some work that I can do, then I am present, command me.

Dhritarashtra said, Vidur! Intelligent Sanjay had come, has gone away after saying bad things to me. Tomorrow in the assembly, he will recite the words of Ajatashatru Yudhishthira.

Today, I could not understand the words of that Kuruveer Yudhishthira. This is burning my organs, and this is what has kept me awake till now.

Tat! I am still awake burning with worry. Say whatever you think is good for me. Because among us, you are expert in the knowledge of Dharma and Artha.

Ever since Sanjaya returned from the place of the Pandavas, my mind has not attained complete peace. All the senses are getting disturbed. What will he say tomorrow, this is what is worrying me a lot at the moment.

Vidur ji said, Rajan! The one who has a conflict with the strong, the weak man without resources, the one whose everything has been taken away, the lustful, and the thief gets the disease of waking up in the night.

Narendra! Have you also come into contact with these great defects? Are you suffering because of the greed of someone else's money?

Dhritarashtra said, I want to hear your beautiful words of righteousness and welfare, because you are the only one respected, even by scholars in this Rajarshi dynasty.

Vidur ji said, Maharaj Dhritarashtra! King Yudhishthira, endowed with the best qualities, can be the master of all the three worlds. They were obedient to you, but you sent them to the forest.

Despite being knowledgeable about the pious soul and dharma, you could not recognize them due to being blind, due to this, you became very opposite to them, and you did not agree to give them a share of the kingdom.

Yudhishthira has absence of cruelty, kindness, religion, truth and valor; He keeps a worthy intellect in you. Because of these virtues, they are silently suffering many tribulations.

How do you want to increase wealth, by placing the burden of the kingdom, on unworthy persons like Duryodhana, Shakuni, Karna and Dushasan?

Knowledge of one's real nature, industry, the power to bear sorrow, and stability in dharma - the man who does not lose his effort, he is called a scholar.

One who indulges in good deeds, and abstains from bad deeds, as well as one who is a believer and a devotee, those virtues are the signs of a scholar.

Anger, joy, pride, shame, arrogance, and considering oneself to be worthy of worship - the one who is not corrupted by these feelings, he is called a scholar.

The one whose duties, advice and preconceived ideas are not known by others, but comes to know only after the work is done, is called a pandit.

Cold, heat, fear, affection, wealth, or poverty - the one who does not disturb his work due to these, he is called a scholar.

The one, whose worldly intelligence follows dharma and reasoning, and the one, who avoids pleasure, and chooses only effort, he is called a scholar.

Men of judicious intelligence, desire to act according to their strength, and do so. They do not neglect anything by considering it trivial.

A learned man listens to a subject for a long time, but understands it soon. He does not say anything in vain about others, without asking. This nature of his is the main identity of a Pandit.

Men of sage-like intellect do not desire rare things, do not wish to grieve about what is lost, and do not panic when faced with calamity.

The one who first decides, and then starts the work, does not stop in the middle of the work, does not let the time go in vain, and keeps the mind under control, he is called a scholar.

Bharatkul - Bhushan! Pandits are interested in noble deeds, work for progress, and do not find faults in those who do good.

The one who does not get elated when he is respected, does not get angry with disrespect, and whose mind does not get agitated like the pool of Ganga ji, he is called a scholar.

The one who has the knowledge of the reality of all material things, knows the method of doing all work, and knows the best way among humans, that person is called a scholar.

One whose speech does not stop anywhere, one who talks in a strange way, skilled and brilliant in logic, and one who can quickly tell the meaning of the book, he is called a scholar.

One whose knowledge follows wisdom, and wisdom follows knowledge, and who does not transgress the dignity of virtuous men, only he can attain the title of a scholar.

One who is proud without reading, who sets big plans even after being poor, and who desires to get money without doing any work, such a person is called fool by pandits.

One who abandons his duty and follows the duty of another, and misbehaves with a friend, he is called a fool.

He, who loves those who do not love him, and abandons those who love him, and who enmities those who are stronger than him, is called a man of foolish thoughts.

The one who makes an enemy a friend, out of hatred hurts a friend, and always starts bad deeds, he is called foolish.

Bharat Shrestha! The one who spreads his works in vain, doubts everywhere, and delays even the work that should be done soon, is a fool.

The one who does not perform Shraddha of ancestors, and does not worship the gods, and who does not get a good friend, he is called a foolish mind.

A fool-minded wretch, comes in uninvited, speaks without being asked, and trusts even untrustworthy men.

The one who blames others by pointing out his faults, even though he himself is behaving faultily, and the one who, despite being incapable, gets angry unnecessarily, that person is a great fool.

The person who, without understanding his strength, desires something that is against Dharma and Artha, without working, is called a fool in this world.

Rajan! One who preaches to the unjust, worships nothingness, and one who takes shelter of the miser, is called a foolish mind.

Even after getting a lot of money, knowledge and opulence, he does not show off, he is called a great scholar.

Who can be more cruel than the one, who eats good food and wears good clothes alone, without sharing with those who can be supported by him.

Man sins alone, and many people make fun of him. Those who enjoy themselves are spared, but its doer is the part of the blame.

An arrow released by a brave archer may or may not kill one. But wisdom used by the wise can destroy the entire nation along with the king.

With one (intellect) to decide two (duty and non-duty) by four (sama, charity, punishment, discrimination) to control three (enemy, friend, and indifferent). By conquering the five (senses), knowing the six (treaty, deity, vehicle, asana, duplicity and samashrayup) qualities and giving up the seven (woman, gambling, Mrigaya, alcohol, harsh words, harshness of punishment, and earning money by injustice), Be happy.

The juice of poison kills only one (the drinker), the weapon kills only one, but the explosion of the mantra destroys the king, along with the nation and the subjects.

Don't eat delicious food alone, don't decide any subject alone, don't walk alone, and if many people are asleep then don't stay awake alone among them.

Rajan! Just as a boat is the only means to cross the sea, in the same way truth is the only step to heaven, nothing else, but you are not understanding it.

Forgiving men are accused of only one fault, there is no possibility of the other. That fault is that people consider a forgiving person to be incapable.

But that should not be considered a fault of a forgiving man, because forgiveness is a great force. Forgiveness is the virtue of the incapable and the ornament of the capable.

Forgiveness is a form of subjugation in this world. Well, what is not accomplished by forgiveness? What will evil men do to the one who has the sword of peace in his hand?

A fire that has fallen in a grassless place extinguishes itself. An unforgiving man makes himself, as well as others, a part of the blame.

Only dharma is the ultimate welfare, only forgiveness is the best way of peace. The only knowledge that, gives ultimate satisfaction, and only non-violence gives happiness.

Just as a snake eats up the creatures like frogs etc., living in burrows, similarly this earth eats up the king, who does not oppose the enemy, and the Brahmin who does not provide service to the country

Not speaking harshly at all, and not respecting evil men, a man who does these two deeds, gets special glory in this world.

Women who wish for a man desired by another woman, and men who respect a man worshiped by others, these two types of people are going to believe in others.

One who desires valuable things despite being poor, and one who becomes angry despite being incapable, both of these are like thorns that dry up one's body.

Only two do not suit because of their opposite actions, the indolent householder and the ascetic engaged in worldly affairs.

Rajan! These two types of men get a place even above heaven, the one who forgives even when he is powerful, and the one who gives charity even when he is poor.

Only two misuses of the money earned justly should be considered, giving it to the undeserving and not giving it to the deserving.

One who does not give charity even though he is rich, and who cannot bear suffering even when he is poor, these two types of people should be drowned in water by tying a strong stone around their neck.

Best man! These two types of men, having penetrated the solar system, attain the upward movement, the sannyasin with yoga and the warrior killed in the battle.

Bharat Shrestha! The scholars of the Vedas, know that these three types of fair methods are heard, for the accomplishment of the work of human beings - good, medium and bad.

Rajan! Uttam, Madhyam and Adham - these are three types of men, they should be engaged in only three types of deeds as they deserve.

Rajan! Only three are not considered to be entitled to wealth - woman, son, and slave. Whatever they earn, that money belongs to the one under whom they live.

Deprivation of another's wealth, contact with another's wife, and abandonment of a close friend, all these three faults are destructive.

Lust, anger and greed, these are the three doors of hell that destroy the soul, so these three should be abandoned.

Getting a boon, getting a kingdom, and the birth of a son, these three on one side, and getting rid of the enemy's suffering, this on the one side; Those three and this one are the same.

Devotee, servant, and those who say that I am yours, these three types of surrendered people should not be abandoned even when there is a crisis.

Secret advice should not be done with people with little intelligence, opinionated, hasty and praise - these four are said to be worth giving up for the Mahabali king. Learned men should recognize such people.

Tat! Lakshmivan, who is situated in Grihastha-dharma, four types of people should always live in your house, the old man of his family, a person of high family in trouble, a friend without money, and a sister without children.

King! On being asked by Indra, the four, to bear fruit immediately, whom Brihaspati ji had told him, hear them from me.

The determination of the gods, the influence of the wise, the humility of the learned, and the destruction of the sinners.

The four actions are supposed to remove fear, but they themselves give fear if not performed properly. Those actions are - offering fire with respect, observing silence with respect, self-study with respect, and the ritual of yajna with respect.

Bharat Shrestha! Father, Mother, Ami, Soul and Guru - Man should serve these five fires with great effort.

Gods, ancestors, humans, ascetics and guests - one who worships these five attains pure fame.

Rajan! Wherever you go, friends, enemies, indifferent, shelter-giver, and shelter-taker - these five will follow you.

If a man with five sense organs gets infected with any one of his sense defects, then his intelligence flows out of it like water through the hole of a conch shell.

Men desiring wealth or progress should shun these six bad qualities – sleep, drowsiness, fear, anger, laziness and procrastination (the habit of delaying a quick task).

A teacher who does not preach, a man who does not recite mantras, a king who is unable to protect, a woman who speaks harsh words, a cowherd who wants to live in a village, and a barber who wants to live in a forest - leave these six as they are.

Like a teacher who does not preach, a king who does not chant, a king who is unable to protect, a woman who speaks harsh words, a cowherd who wants to live in a village and a barber who wants to live in a forest - leave these six like a sea voyager who does, abandons the torn boat.

A man should never give up these six qualities - truth, charity, hard work, anusuya (absence of tendency to show faults in qualities), forgiveness and patience.

Rajan! Income of wealth, being free from diseases, being friendly and beloved by a woman, being under the command of a son, and knowledge of the knowledge that produces wealth - these six things are pleasant in this human world.

The one who controls the six enemies that live in the mind - lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride and jealousy, does not indulge in the sins of the multi-sensed man, then what to speak of the miseries that arise from them.

The following six types of human beings make their livelihood from six types of people, the seventh is not achieved.

Thieves make their living from unwary men, doctors from patients, drunken women from idlers, priests from hosts, kings from quarrelsome men, and learned men from fools.

Cows, service, farming, women, learning, and association with Shudras - these six things are destroyed by not taking care of them even for a moment.

These six always show disrespect to their former benefactor - the disciple to the teacher after the education is over, the married son to the mother.

When lust is pacified, a man despises a woman, a man who has done his work, despises helper, a man who crosses a difficult river, despises boat, and a sick man, after getting rid of his disease, despises a doctor.

Rajan! To be healthy, not to be in debt, not to live in foreign countries, to associate with good people, to make a living by one's instinct, and to be fearless - these are the six pleasures of the human world.

The envious, the hater, the discontented, the wrathful, the ever suspicious, and the one who lives on the fate of others - these six are always unhappy.

The king should always give up these seven painful faults. Even strong-rooted kings are often destroyed by them.

Feminine attachment, gambling, hunting, drinking, harshness of words, giving harsh punishments, and misusing money.

There are eight precursors of a man falling in the face of destruction - First he hates Brahmins, then he becomes a vessel of opposition.

Grabs the wealth of Brahmins, wants to kill them, takes pleasure in criticizing Brahmins, does not want to hear their praise.

He does not remember them in Yajna-Yagadi, and starts finding fault in them on asking for something. A wise man should understand all these faults and leave them after understanding them.

These eight are the essence of happiness, and they are also the means of their worldly happiness.

Meeting with friends, getting more money, hugging a son, propensity for sexual intercourse.

Speaking dear words on time, progress among the people of your class, getting desired things, and respect in the public society.

Wisdom, nobility, control of the senses, knowledge of the scriptures, prowess, not speaking much, charity according to one's capacity, and gratitude - these eight qualities increase a man's fame.

The learned man who knows the abode of the soul, this house like body, with nine doors (eyes, ears etc.), three pillars (Vata, Pitta, Kafrupi), five witnesses (Gyanendriyarupa), he is very knowledgeable.

Maharaj Dhritarashtra! Ten types of people do not know Dharma, listen to their names. Drunk, Inattentive, Mad, Tired, Grumpy, Hungry,

The rash, the greedy, the fearful and the lustful - these are the ten. That's why learned men should not increase attachment among all these people.

The rash, the greedy, the fearful and the lustful - these are the ten. That's why learned men should not increase attachment among all these people.

The king who gives up lust and anger, and gives wealth to the deserving, is expert, knowledgeable in the scriptures, and quick to fulfil his duty, is considered by all to be a proof.

One who knows how to create trust in humans, punishes only those whose crimes have been proved, who knows the minimum amount of punishment, and the use of forgiveness, all wealth goes to the service of that king.

He who does not insult the weak, who always behaves wisely with the enemy, does not like war with the strong, and shows bravery when the time comes, he is patient.

The valiant great man, who is never sad when faced with objection, but takes shelter of industry with caution, and bears suffering in time, his enemies are defeated.

The one who does not do futile foreign travel, associating with sinners, foreign travel, hypocrisy, theft, backbiting and drinking alcohol, he is always happy.

One who does not start Dharma, Artha and Kama with anger or haste, tells the truth when asked, does not like to quarrel for a friend, does not get angry when he is not honored,

does not lose discretion, does not see the faults of others, shows mercy to everyone, does not give bail to anyone being weak, does not speak excessively, and tolerates disputes, such a person gets praise everywhere.

The one who never pretends to be arrogant, does not brag about his might in front of others, does not utter harsh words even when distraught with anger, that person is always loved by people.

The one who does not rekindle the fire of enmity that has subsided, does not show pride, does not show inferiority, and does not act inappropriately thinking that 'I am in trouble', that man of good conduct is called Aryajan the best.

One who does not rejoice in his own happiness, does not rejoice in the sorrow of others, and does not repent by giving charity; He is called righteous among the people.

The person who wishes to know the country's behavior, ethos, and religions of the castes, he gets the conscience of the good and bad. wherever he goes; Always establishes his supremacy over the great mass group.

The wise one who gives up pride, attachment, jealousy, sinful deeds, treason, backbiting, enmity with group and disputes with drunkards, lunatics and wicked, is the best.

The one who does charity, worship of God, auspicious work, self-consciousness, and many types of worldly conduct - these deeds worthy of being done daily, the gods achieve success in his abhyudaya.

The one who marries, befriends, behaves and talks with his equals, not with inferior men, and always puts forward men who are high in qualities, that scholar's policy is the best.

The one who distributes food to his dependents, eats little food, sleeps little even after doing a lot of work, and gives money even to those who are not friends on demand, all calamities leave that man of mind far away.

Whose work according to his wish and against the wish of others is not known to others, due to the mantra being kept secret and the desired work being executed properly, his work does not get spoiled even a little bit.

A person who is ready to give peace to all beings, truthful, gentle, respects others, and has pure thoughts, he gets more fame among the people of his caste like a shining, best grain coming out of a good mine.

He who himself is more modest, is considered the best of all people, because of his infinite brightness, pure heart and concentration, he shines like the sun in the light.

Ambikanandan! The five sons of king Pandu who were born in the forest by the curse, they are as powerful as the five Indras, you have brought them up and taught them from childhood, they also always obey your orders.

Tat! By giving them their rightful share of the kingdom, you enjoy with your sons. Narendra! By doing this, you will not remain the subject of criticism of gods or humans.
