Sankalp:-
O Saqi (God), give me a green coloured honey pot, so that it may be useful and fruitful for me during the war. You give me that (definitely give it) so that I can refresh my heart and take out the pearl (pearl in the form of a misfortune-stricken country and society) from the mud.
(He bows down) in the name of that Lord who is the Lord of the sword, knife, arrow, spear and shield.
(In the name of that Lord) who is the Lord of the valiant men trained in war, and who is the Lord of the horses whose feet move in the air (with great speed).
The same one who gave you the kingdom, (he) gave me the wealth of protecting the Dharma.
He gave you Turkishness with deceit and falsehood. (He) gave me the power to heal with truth and purity of mind.
The name Aurangzeb (king) does not suit you. Because one cannot be deceived by Aurangzebs (kings).
Your rosary is more than a bead and a string. Because with it (the grain) you sow the grains and with it (the string) you spread your net. Meaning - The pretense of doing bhajans (devotional songs) is so that people believe in you, and you trap them.
You have mixed your father's soil with your brother's blood through your corrupt actions.
And with that (with the mortar of blood and mud) you laid the foundation of a raw house – to build your house of luxury.
Now, with the grace of Akaal Purusha, I shall shower such rain with iron water (from shining weapons)
that not even a trace of this inauspicious boundary wall (the boundary wall of the building of Mughal rule) should remain on this holy land (India).
You have come unsuccessful from the mountains of the South (Maharashtra) and have also come from Mewar after drinking the bitter cup (of defeat).
When you look towards this direction (Punjab), you forget all that bitterness and failure.
I will create such a fire under your shoes that I will not even let you drink water from Punjab.
What if the jackal killed the two lion cubs in this way through deceit and treachery.
While the brave lion remains alive, he will take revenge on you.
I will not be deceived further by your (Aurangzeb's) name of God. Because I have seen your God and your God's words.
I no longer have faith in your oath. There is no other work left for me except the sword.
If you (Aurangzeb) are an old and experienced wolf, then I too keep the lion (the disciple named 'Singh') outside the net.
If you talk to me, I will show you the holy path.
In the battlefield, both the armies (mine and yours) should be lined up in a line and should be visible to each other from a distance.
There should be a two-wide path between the two (armies) - when this battlefield is equipped.
After that I will come to you in the middle of the battlefield with two horsemen.
You have enjoyed the fruits (of others' hard work) with pampering (without working hard, without suffering). You have not tasted the fruits by fighting with warrior men.
(You) come to the battlefield with a sword and dagger. Do not disturb the (innocent) creation of God.
After giving this challenge, Guruji praises God so that he does not become impolite and excessive in the eyes of God. In this we get a glimpse of the feelings of the Vedic sage who used to fight with the enemy. Then considering God as his judge, he used to get absorbed in prayer "Yo'smaan dveshti yam vaayam dvismastam vo jambhe dadhamah." (Those who hate us, whom we hate, we keep them in your jaw - we hand them over to you.)
He is the most perfect of all, He is ever constant and kind. He gives as per the wish, He is the provider of bread and livelihood, He is kind and merciful.
(He is) the shelter-giver, the donor and the helper. He is the forgiver of sins, the provider of livelihood and the one who makes the mind (Chitta) happy.
(He) is the king of kings, the bestower of virtues and distinctions, and the guide. He is without caste, (without distinction of caste) and beyond logic, and formless.
(Those who) have neither equipment, nor eagles, nor army, nor land, (if he is blessed with them) God will give them wealth and heaven.
This holy world is situated beneath that visible manifestation. He keeps on giving wealth and riches like the visible presence.
He is the Giver, the Pure and the Sustainer of all. He is Merciful and the Provider of sustenance to every nation.
(He) is the Lord of the nations, (He) is the greatest of the great. He is the most beautiful in beauty, He is the provider of sustenance and is merciful.
He is the master of cleverness, the protector of the weak, the protector of the downtrodden and the destroyer of the wicked.
(He) is the custodian of laws and is full of nobility. He is the knower of truth and the author of Shrutis (Vedic Scriptures).
He is the possessor of knowledge and cleverness. He is the knower of truth and the revealer of it.
He is the knower of all knowledge, the scholar and the Lord. He is the revealer of all the works of the world, the illuminator.
He is the one who completes the world's tasks, is great. He is the knower of all the sciences, is a scholar and is the world leader.
In the above prayers, we get a glimpse of Guruji's devotee heart. Here and there, God's qualities have been repeated. The reason for this should be considered to be devotion to God and engrossedness in devotion. There should be no fear of repetition because there is no repetition in remembering God's name.
After this, Guruji again rebukes Aurangzeb for breaking his oath.
I do not believe (your) oath that “God is witness” – “God is one”.
I do not have even an iota of faith in that oath because your Bakshi (treasurer) and Diwan (other officials) who brought your message to me are all liars.
Whoever believes in your Quran, he too will be sad and humiliated on the last day (day of death or day of doomsday).
(On whom) the shadow of the bird named Huma falls, a crow cannot lay a hand on him (no matter how brave the crow considers itself to be).
Guruji has symbolically explained that those Sikhs who have tasted Amrit and accepted discipleship have become kings by passing under the shadow of the bird named Huma - no one in the form of Aurangzeb and his army can lay a hand on them, no matter how brave they consider themselves to be.
(If) a lion keeps a male lion behind its back, then goats, sheep, deer etc. do not use that path.
Guruji means that I have the support of the lion in the form of Khalsa on my back. Do not dare to send sheep, goats, deer etc. in the form of Mughal army towards me.
Even if I had taken an oath of Dharma in secret, I would not have taken a single step forward or backward from it.
Guruji is referring to taking an oath of Dharma during the attack of the Mughals on Anandpur Sahib and Chamkaur Sahib and then breaking it and attacking again.
What could forty hungry men do when a million fell upon those unaware people?
Suddenly the oath breakers arrived. They arrived surrounded by swords, arrows and spears.
Then I was forced to intervene and came armed with bow and arrow.
When the matter stays unresolved by all means, then it is in accordance with Dharma to raise one's hand with the sword.
How can I believe your oath by the Quran? You say otherwise (when you get the work done) that what do I need from you?
I did not know that this man (Aurangzeb) was as cunning as a fox. Otherwise, I would never have come even a little bit on the path of believing in this oath.
It is not right to injure or kill anyone who has come by the oath of the Quran.
They came stealthily like flies in the night. And (as soon as they came) they became agitated with anger.
Everyone who came out of the wall got hit by a single arrow and drowned in their own blood.
Whoever did not come out of that fort was neither hit by arrows nor was humiliated.
When I saw (your commander) Nahar Khan coming for the battle, he immediately tasted the blow of one of my arrows.
In times of war they run away in the end and many Khans boast outside (the battlefield).
Just then the other Afghan army arrived for the battle, with a flow of arrows and spears like a flowing stream.
Many attacked, many were wounded, (they killed two men from our side) (Guruji's two sons Ajit Singh and Jubhar Singh) and even sacrificed their own lives.
That condemned, infamous and humiliated Khawaja Jafar Beg did not come to the battlefield like men.
Alas, if I had looked at his face, I would have shot an incurable arrow at him (killed him).
In the end, many (people) were wounded by arrows and tufang (spears) and many men from both sides were killed instantly.
There was a shower of arrows and swords, so that the ground became red in colour.
There was such a pile of (cut off) heads and hands and legs that the battlefield seemed filled with balls and bats.
(As soon as) the sound of arrow and bow was heard, (in the same way) cries of 'Hai Huy' started coming from the world.
After this the archers who tried to take revenge created such a commotion that even the men lost their senses.
After all, what kind of war can manliness wage? When so many people attack a person merely forty.
When the Sun, the lamp of the world, hid behind the curtain, the Moon that is visible to all, rose.
Every person who believes in the words of God, God himself comes to him as a guide.
Without a hair being harmed, nor did my body suffer any pain, as I, the killer of enemies, came out alive in my body.
I did not know that this man is a promise breaker (and) that he is a worshipper of wealth and power and a breaker of religious faith.
In him, there is neither any worship towards religious beliefs nor any religious practices. There is neither knowledge of God nor firm faith.
Every man who worships his faith. (He) does not follow through on his vows.
I don't believe this man. What's the big deal with his "I swear by the Quran or God is one and the same" (swearing)?
Even if (such a man) accepts the oath on the Quran, I do not have even an iota of faith in him.
If you had faith in yourself (your words to me), you would have girded up your loins (presented yourself) and come forward.
This sentence (which you said to me) is (was) binding on you, I swear by God, and this oath (was) taken with me.
If you yourself stand up with all your heart and soul (to complete the task) then the work will be accomplished.
It is your duty to perform your duties and compare your actions with what you have written.
I received (your) written (letter) and also the verbal message (through the messenger). It is appropriate that the work should be pleasing (to all).
(This shows that Guruji wrote this Zaafarnaama to Aurangzeb in response to Aurangzeb's letter and verbal message.)
Similarly, a man should be someone who can see. He should not have anything in his stomach or in his mouth.
I am not against what (your) Qazi has told me. If you are truthful then come (here) yourself.
(This shows that Aurangzeb had sent his Qazi to Guruji)
If that oath of yours on the Quran is true, then I am sending him to you. (Meaning if you swear on the Quran to call me, then I am sending the same oath to you, that is, I also swear on the Quran that you come and meet me, I will not cheat you.)
In the letter, Aurangzeb had assured Guruji by swearing on the Quran that you may come without any fear, I swear on the Quran that you will not be cheated. Through this sher, Guruji says that if your oath on the Quran is true and there is no malice in your heart, then I also swear on the Quran that you come yourself, you will not be cheated.
If you come to the town of Kangra and after that (both of us) meet each other.
There is not the slightest danger for you on this path (in coming to Kangra to meet me). (Because) the entire Bairad community is under my command.
Come, so that I may speak to you myself. (and) be kind to you.
Choose one horse from a thousand and come with it, so that you can win this country (Punjab) from me.
Guruji means that if you want to win then send your horse here like Ashwamedha Yagna and win this country from me through Dharmayuddha. What is this that you talk about peace through pages and verbal messages and attack secretly.
If you worship God, then do not be lazy in this work of mine.
It is better for you to know God. Do not hurt anyone on someone's advice.
Your justice and your protection of religion are strange. I regret such leadership. I regret it.
This fatwa (religious system) of yours is strange. (Because) saying anything other than the truth is a crime.
Do not shed blood by using sword on anyone without any fear. The sky (God's destiny) will spread your blood with the sword.
(In this sher, we get a glimpse of Guruji's visionary form. In fact, the truth of this sher is proved by the cruelty with which the blood of Aurangzeb's descendants was shed after Aurangzeb.)
O man who claims to know God! Do not be careless. Because He (God) is independent of all kinds of thanks (and salutations).
He is undoubtedly the king of kings. He is the true master of space and time.
That Supreme God is the Master of time and space, and He is the judge of every shelter and dependent person.
He treats everyone equally, whether it is a weak ant or a huge elephant. He is the protector of the weak and destroyer of the careless.
That when his name is the protector of the weak, he is independent and innocent of every thanks (salutation etc.).
He is devoid of Varna (without any distinction of caste), he is beyond logic. He is both a guide and a traveller.
It is obligatory on you to do this with the oath of the Qur'an. Complete the good deeds as per your words.
It is appropriate that you worship wisdom and knowledge (use your intelligence), because you commit atrocities in His work (of God).
What if four children (Sahabzaade, Ajit Singh, Jubhar Singh, Jorawar Singh, Fatah Singh) were killed. Abha Kundal with Mahavish snake is remaining.
What bravery is this that you extinguish the sparks and lift the breaths of fire up to your shoulders.
How beautifully the poet Firdausi, who is a beautiful narrator has said that - “Hasteful work is the work of the devil (Ahraman).”
From the day I come to you in your royal court (as per your sworn invitation), you will be a witness in this manner. (That is, if I come to the court and I am cheated, then on the Day of Judgment you will be a witness that this person got into trouble because of my trust.)
And if you forget this also, then God will forget you too.
If you set your mind to this work (of mine) then God will be beneficial and helpful to you.
This work is good, it is for the protection of Dharma, for knowing God and for the good of life.
I do not consider you to be a knower of God (believer) because you have done many heart-breaking things.
If you knew God to be kind, then you would not have sought greatness from the government in this manner.
Even if you swear a hundred times on the Quran, I do not believe it even a bit.
O Aurangzeb! You are happy (thinking yourself to be) the king of kings. And (think) yourself to be a clever man and a capable whip (who rules firmly with punishment).
The qualities that are being discussed or accused here have been said to show that "you are not like that in reality". After this Guruji again started singing the praises of God. In the next four verses Guruji has described the grace of God on him and has sung his glory with a devotional heart. Here there is repetition in the praise of God, but repetition should not be considered a fault in the praise of God.
He is beautiful in form, has a luminous heart. He is the owner of countries, the master and the lord.
(Here Guruji means that just as you consider yourself to be the king of kings, clever and the controller of situations, O Aurangzeb, it is not you, but God himself who is everything, beautiful people are shaped by his image, he is the owner of the earth, and he is the only master who is worthy of salutation. You who consider yourself to be the king of kings etc. are wrong.)
He is (combined with) the intellect with adornment and with the power of the sword. He is the master of the wealth and the sword as well.
He has a bright heart and is the most beautiful of the beautiful. He is the Creator and the giver of land and wealth.
His donation in the hill war (in the form of victory by the grace of God) was great. He is full of all good qualities and has the glory of the Saptarishi constellation.
(Here the war with the hill kings and victory over them by the grace of God has been mentioned.)
O Aurangzeb! Even though you are an emperor, you deserve to be condemned because you are far from justice and also far from Dharma.
I have killed the cunning hill kings (Kesari Chand, Ajmeri Chand, Hari Chand etc.). They were worshippers of the god of Delhi, and I am the destroyer of that idol.
Look at the cruel turn of time. (Enemies) attacked from behind and caused harm.
See the noble (merciful) play of the Holy Lord that He makes one (man) kill ten lakhs of people.
If the friend (God) is kind, then what can the enemy do. Because charity and generosity is the work of that generous donor.
He granted me release, and showed me the right path, and gave my tongue the power to praise.
For the enemy, he created darkness in the hour of need and brought out the orphans (orphans - who had no protector. This refers to himself and his five Sikhs) without even getting hurt by a thorn.
Every person who is faithful to Him (God), the Merciful (God) shows mercy to him.
यदि कोई बहुतों की हृदय और प्राण से सेवा करे तो ईश्वर उसको शान्ति और सवास्ति प्रदान करता है।
When the enemy tries to trick him (the devotee of God), then God himself helps him.
If lakhs of people come (to attack) one (man) then God is his protector.
If your eyes are on the army and gold, then with me is the eye that can see God.
That he is proud of his country (ruling over it) and his wealth. I have the refuge of the Akaal Purusha.
Do not be oblivious (drunk) of this perishable inn-like world, because the world is continuously passing away.
Where is King Kaikhusro, where is King Jamshed's cup. Where is Hazrat Adam who has been handed over to death.
Where is Faridu, where are Bahman and Isfandiyar, (in this period of time) the rise and fall of Dara is not counted at all.
Where is King Sikandar, where is Sher Shah. Not even one is alive and unharmed in the place.
Where is Taimur Lang today, where is Babar, where is Humayun and where is Emperor Akbar.
Seeing the unfaithfulness of the world (time) that everyone (from time to time) has a soul (householder) and a body (house) changing.
And if you harass the poor and the weak, then you are tearing your oath apart with a saw.
If God is a friend, what can an enemy do? Even if he makes enmity with a hundred bodies.
Even if the enemy tries to oppose him in a thousand ways, no one can weaken even a single hair of his (person blessed with the grace of God).
