Then the Bhargava, the Vidarbhan, asked him: “Lord, how many Gods maintain this creature, and how many illumine it, and which of these again is the mightiest?”
To him answered the Rishi Pippalada: “These are the Gods - Ether, Wind, Fire, Water, Earth, Speech, Mind, Sight and Hearing. These nine illumine the creature; therefore, they vaunted themselves, - We, even we support this harp of God, and we are the preservers.
The senior (most powerful) of them 'Pran' (Breath) said, "Don't be deluded; I support this instrument of God by dividing myself into five forms, I am its protector."
But they did not believe him.
So, he got angry and started rising upwards, he started coming out of the body.
But when the Prana (breath or life-force) comes out of the body, all the others begin to go out with it, and when the Prana remains established, all the others remain established.
As the bees are with the honey-king?
When he goes out, they all go out with him and when he settles in, they all settle in.
So are 'speech', 'mind', 'Sight' and 'Hearing'.
After that they all became overjoyed and started singing praises of 'Prana' (life-force).
Look, this is he, that is 'Agni' (Fire) and 'Sun' that heats, this is he, that is 'Rain', Indra, 'Earth', Air, Matter, Deity, Form, Formless and Immortality.
Just as all the spokes of the wheel of a chariot meet in the navel, similarly everything is established in 'Prana' (Breath), Rigveda and Yajurveda and Samaveda, Yajna, Brahminhood and Kshatriyahood.
Oh soul!
You move in the womb like Prajapati (Eternal Father), and you take birth in harmony with your parents.
You, who live by Prana (Breath), this world of creatures offers the burnt offering to you.
You are the most powerful and fiercest among all the gods and you are the first sacrifice (Swadha) for the ancestors, you are the truth of the sages and their well-being, and you are Atharva among the sons of Angiras.
Oh soul!
You are Indra because of your radiance and Rudra because you preserve.
Like the astrologer Nakshatradhipati, you roam in the space as the sun.
Oh Prana (breath/lifeforce)!
When you rain in the form of rain, then your subjects are filled with joy because now enough food will be produced.
Oh Breath!
You are the unrefined form, and you are the only purity 'Agni' (fire), you are the all-consumer and the master of the whole world, we are going to give you your food because O Matarishvan, you are our 'father'.
Your body which is established in speech, which is established in the hearing and sight, and which is spread in the mind, make it auspicious (Shiva).
O Life!
Don't go out of our midst.
This whole universe, even all that is established in the heavens, is under the control of 'Prana'.
Protect us as a mother protects her little sons.
Give us fortune and beauty (Shri), give us wisdom.
