Bhaj Govindam

In this prayer, Adi Shankara emphasizes the importance of devotion for God as a means to spiritual development and to liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The prayer leaves one in no doubt that the renunciation of our egotistical differences and surrender to God makes for salvation.

Bhaj Govindam

O deluded-confused-unable to find a way out, chant the names of Almighty-Govind, worship Govind, love Govind, since memorising the rules of grammar (daily chores-routine) cannot save one at the time of death. One who is not thoughtful, insensitive, irresponsible should pray to the God.

O deluded-illusioned! Give up the lust to amass wealth. Reject all desires such desires from the mind and take up the path of virtuousness-piousity-righteousness. One should be content-satisfied happy with the money earned through honest means. One should earn money through righteous means without fraud, cheating, deceiving, forgery etc.

One should not be governed by lust, sexuality, sensuality, passions towards women since they are nothing except a means to corrupt the mind. The woman’s anatomy is nothing more than flesh. Under the influence of delusion, one is not able to isolate himself from vulgarity, wretchedness. One should deliberate-meditate over this again and again mentally.

Life is as ephemeral as water drops on a lotus leaf. Be aware that the whole world is troubled by disease, ego and grief. One did not exist before and he will not exist thereafter, as well.

As long as one is fit and capable to earn money, everyone in the family show affection, respect towards him. But afterwards, when his body becomes weak, he turns old, no one cares, inquiries about him. No one feels the need to consult him. Even the servants ignore him.

People are concerned about one till he alive. As soon as the soul-vital air (Pran Vayu), escape the body, near and dear too wish to remain away-aloof from it. On the other hand, they are afraid of it. Even the wife prefers to remain away from the corpse-dead body-remains, out of fear (-ghost).

One idles away (waste) childhood in sports (play), during youth, he is attached to woman, in old age he keeps worrying about future, but it seldom that he prefers to be engrossed with Govind-the Par Brahm Parmeshwar at any stage. In fact, he does not know, understand the significance-importance of it.

Who is your wife? Who is your son? Indeed, strange is this world. O dear, think again and again who you are and from where have you come. One does not know his origin, earlier incarnations (previous births).

Interaction with saints brings detachment, detachment leads to gist-nectar-elixir pertaining to the Almighty and this leads to Salvation-Liberation-Assimilation in the Ultimate-Almighty.

As soon as one grows old, he loses potency-vigour-strength, after drying ponds-lakes lose their status as reservoirs, loss of wealth-poverty drives away the relatives and with the awakening of gist of the understanding of the Almighty; one loses charm of this world.

One should not boast of wealth, strength-power-might and youth-vigor-vitality. The time-Kal will perish all these in a fraction of moment. He should consider this world to be illusion-perishable-destructible and make efforts to attain-achieve the Par Brahm Parmeshwar.

Desires never vanish-diminish-satisfied from the mind of one with the expiry of time. He has to control-rein them. This can be achieved by diverting oneself towards the Almighty, through prayers-devotion. Day and night, dusk and dawn, winter and spring come and go, cyclically. In this sport of Time entire life goes away, but the storm of desire never departs or diminishes.

This bouquet of twelve verses-Shlok-rhymes was imparted to a grammarian by the all-knowing, god-like Shri Shankaracharya. This is a piece of preaching.

One should not worry about his wealth, family all the time. He should have faith in God who controls everything. The virtuous company of the diligent-righteous-pious helps one in sailing through this vast reservoir of deeds-actions-mistakes-vices. Oh deluded! Why do you worry about your wealth and wife? Is there no one to take care of them? Only the company of saints can act as a boat in three worlds to take you out from this ocean-cycle of births and rebirths.

Matted and untidy hair, shaven heads, orange-saffron coloured cloths are all a way to earn livelihood by those who do not wish to earn their bread through righteous-honest means-hard work. O deluded man why don’t you understand it, even after seeing.

Even an old man with weak limbs, hairless head, toothless mouth, walking with the help of a stick, still has high hopes-unfulfilled desires. Desires are unending. Fulfilment of one desire leads to yet another new one.

One who warms his body by fire after sunset living in the open under the sky-homeless, curls his body to his knees to avoid cold; eats the begged food and sleeps beneath the tree, he is also bound by desires, even in these difficult situations. Desires never die.

It's not possible to attain Salvation by visiting religious places of worship-pilgrimages, fasting, donations-charity, without understanding the gist of the dharma, even in hundred births, by following any of the religion-varnashram.

Renunciation-detachment-relinquishment leads to bliss-Parmanand-Ultimate Pleasure-Salvation. Reside in a temple or below a tree, sleep on mother earth as your bed, stay alone, leave all the belongings and comforts, such renunciation can give all the pleasures to anybody.

One may like meditative practice or worldly pleasures, may be attached or detached. But only one who fixing-trains his mind on God lovingly enjoys bliss, enjoys bliss, enjoys bliss.

Those who have studied-understood-learnt Bhagavad Geeta, worship Bhagwan Shri Krishna with love & affection even for a while-once-a little-fraction of second, drink just a drop of water from the holy Ganga, Yam Raj-the deity of death has no control over them.

Repeated births and death, stay in the mother’s womb, makes it extremely difficult to go beyond this universe. Hey Murari! Please help me pass through all this by extending your grace-mercy.

One who wears rags-teared cloths by coming under the chariot, travel-move on the path free from virtues and sins-a state of equanimity, trains their minds in the devotion to the Almighty through Yog-meditation, enjoys like a carefree-exuberant child.

Who are you? Who am I? From where have I come? Who is my mother, who is my father? Ponder over these and after understanding-realizing this world to be meaningless like a dream, relinquish it.

Bhagwan Vishnu resides in me, you and everything-everyone else. So, your anger is meaningless-useless. If you wish to attain the eternal status of Vishnu, practice equanimity all the time, in all the things.

Lord Vishnu is present in each and every one of us, in the form of soul. It's only the body which discriminate between the two. Try not to win the love of your friends, brothers, relatives and son(s) or to fight with your enemies. See yourself in each and every one and give up ignorance of duality everywhere. Practice equanimity.

Give up desires, anger, greed and delusion. Ponder over your real self-nature. Those devoid of the knowledge of self, come in this world-a hidden hell, endlessly.

Sing thousand glories of Lord Vishnu, constantly remembering his various forms in your heart. Enjoy the company of virtuous-righteous-pious-noble people and do acts of charity for the poor, down-trodden and the needy.

People use this body for pleasure-enjoyment-passions-sexuality-sensuality-lust, which gets diseased in the end. Though in this world everything ends in death, man does not give up the sinful conduct. Greed, unfulfilled desires always keep him pushing to wretchedness-vices-sins-misconduct.

Keep on thinking that money is root cause of all troubles. It cannot give even a bit of happiness-pleasure. A rich man fears even his own sons, who are willing to kill him for the sake of wealth, luxuries. This is the law-nature pertaining to riches and applicable to every one-everywhere.

Perform-conduct-practice Pranayama, the regulation of life forces, take proper food, constantly distinguish the permanent from the fleeting. Chant the holy names of God with love and meditate, with utmost attention. One must utilize his prudence-intelligence to abandon vices-sins-wretchedness.

One must take shelter-asylum-protection under the auspiciousness of his Guru-guide like a devotee and set himself free from the clutches of this perishable world. This will help him in acquiring control over sensuality-vulgarity-useless thoughts-dirty ideas-irrational thoughts. One should become free from repeated cycles of death and births. This will lead to self-control over mind, ideas and retain the Almighty in the heart.

Thus, through a deluded grammarian lost in memorising rules of the grammar, the all-knowing Shri Shankara motivated his disciples for enlightenment.

O the deluded minded, chant Govind, worship Govind, love Govind as there is no other way to cross the life’s ocean except lovingly remembering the holy names of God.
